قد عظم الله حق الوالدين، فأمر بعبادته وتوحيده وجعل برهما مقرونًا بذلك، كما قرن شكرهما بشكره، فقال تعالى: {وَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إلا إِيَّاهُ وَبِالْوَالِدَينِ إِحْسَانًا} [الإسراء: ٢٣]، وقال تعالى: {أَنِ اشْكُرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيكَ} [لقمان: ١٤].
ولا عجب في هذا، فإن للوالدين من الفضل والمعروف ما ليس لأحد غيرهما من الخلق كائنًا من كان، فهما السبب المحسوس المباشر في وجود الولد، وقد عانيا من المشقات على ولدهما الشيء الكثير، من حمل ووضع وإرضاع من قبل الأم، ومن تربية وإنفاق وعناية في حال الطفولة من قبلهما، وقد وقعت الإشارة إلى ذلك في قوله تعالى: {وَوَصَّينَا الْإِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيهِ إِحْسَانًا حَمَلَتْهُ أُمُّهُ كُرْهًا وَوَضَعَتْهُ كُرْهًا} [الأحقاف: ١٥] فسوى بينهما في الوصاية، وخص الأم بما انفردت به.
