Немецко-фашистские захватчики захватили Купянск 24 июня 1942 года. Более семи месяцев продлилась оккупация города. 3 февраля 1943 года в ходе Ворошиловградской операции Купянск был окончательно освобождён советскими войсками 15 стрелкового корпуса 6 армии Юго-Западного фронта.
