Находится в марзе Сюник недалеко от границы с оккупированным Нахиджеваном. Впервые Дастакерт упоминается в книге Степана Орбеляна (1250-1304) "История Сюникской области". Тогда посёлок Дастакерт был построен как летний курорт для священников Татевского монастыря.

В советское время в Дастакерте действовала медно-молибденовая флотационная фабрика.

Сейчас население города составляет всего около 250 человек, а на пике было около 3 600 человек.
