St. Kosmas of Aetolia Orthodox Church in Baba Kosma, Democratic Republic of the Congo. A parish of the Metropolis of Katanga under the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria, it is located in a village named after Fr. Kosmas Grigoriatis. Affectionately termed the "Apostle to Zaire", Fr. Kosmas reposed in the village in 1989 after a fatal car accident. The village was originally named Sofumangu, but the name was changed to Baba Kosma out of the great love the inhabitants have for Fr. Kosmas. Bp. Kosmas of Constantianis visited the parish last month to serve in commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Fr. Kosmas's repose. Romfea reported on this event, and noted that three associates of Fr. Kosmas were in attendance of this liturgy, as they continue their struggle to evangelize the Congolese people. May their efforts continue to bear much fruit!

Telegram | DID YOU KNOW?

Date: |

You may recall that, back when Facebook started changing WhatsApp’s terms of service, a number of news outlets reported on, and even recommended, switching to Telegram. Pavel Durov even said that users should delete WhatsApp “unless you are cool with all of your photos and messages becoming public one day.” But Telegram can’t be described as a more-secure version of WhatsApp. One thing that Telegram now offers to all users is the ability to “disappear” messages or set remote deletion deadlines. That enables users to have much more control over how long people can access what you’re sending them. Given that Russian law enforcement officials are reportedly (via Insider) stopping people in the street and demanding to read their text messages, this could be vital to protect individuals from reprisals. Telegram was co-founded by Pavel and Nikolai Durov, the brothers who had previously created VKontakte. VK is Russia’s equivalent of Facebook, a social network used for public and private messaging, audio and video sharing as well as online gaming. In January, SimpleWeb reported that VK was Russia’s fourth most-visited website, after Yandex, YouTube and Google’s Russian-language homepage. In 2016, Forbes’ Michael Solomon described Pavel Durov (pictured, below) as the “Mark Zuckerberg of Russia.” The regulator said it had received information that messages containing stock tips and other investment advice with respect to selected listed companies are being widely circulated through websites and social media platforms such as Telegram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Individual messages can be fully encrypted. But the user has to turn on that function. It's not automatic, as it is on Signal and WhatsApp.
