«Восток» стала развитием ракет Р-7, которые 4 годами ранее подняли на орбиту Спутник. На старте она весила почти 300 тонн, и была способна вывести на орбиту груз весом почти в 5 тонн. Мощность ее двигателей - 20 миллионов лошадиных сил. Ракета состоит из трех, отделяемых по ходу полета, ступеней, а также космического аппарата «Восток-1», установленного на 3 ступени – именно на нем Гагарин и облетит планету
