تقسیم‌بندی آب در روستاها براساس «مدار گردش آب» بود؛ فاصله میان دونوبت آب‌دهی را مدار گردش آب می‌گفتند. مثلا مدار گردش آب یک روستا هفت شبانه‌روز بود. البته گاه پیش می‌آمد که مدار گردش آب چندین روستای اطراف هم متفاوت می‌شد، این تقسیم‌بندی از جمعیت اولیه یک روستا برگرفته بود. روستایی که نسبت جمعیت اولیه با حجم آب آن کمتر بوده مدار گردش آب آن کوتاه‌تر می‌شد، مثلا شش شبانه‌روز. در برخی روستاها که جمعیت اولیه آن نسبت به میزان آب موجود بیشتر بود اما مدار گردش آب تا ١٤ شبانه‌روز می‌رسید. برای مصرف خانگی نیز یک روز را درنظر می‌گرفتند. اگر فرض کنیم مدار گردش آب ١٠ شبانه‌روز بود، یک روز اضافه به‌عنوان روز استفاده همگانی تعیین می‌کردند. روستاییان، آب را در آن روز برای نظافت، حمام، آبیاری باغچه و شستن لباس به کار می‌گرفتند. آب‌انبار‌های عمومی و نیز حمام روستا در این روز باید پر می‌شد. مالک روستا همواره یک آب‌انبار عمومی برای مردم روستا می‌ساخت. شکل دیگری از تقسیم آب، «خرده‌مالکی» بود. یعنی اگر مدار گردش آب هفت شبانه‌روز بود باز هم هریک از این روزها، درون خود تقسیماتی جزیی‌تر داشتند. هر یک از خانوارها می‌توانست مثلا سه ساعت در روز آب داشته باشد. به این شیوه خرده‌مالکی می‌گفتند. کسی‌که بر جیره‌بندی نظارت می‌کرد آب‌یار نام داشت. سرآب‌یار بر مجموعه آب‌یارها نظارت می‌کرد.
