В XXI веке никто уже не собирается взрывать ядерные бомбы на естественном спутнике Земли, но рассматриваются варианты с размещением баз под лунной поверхностью, либо модули будут засыпаны реголитом (сыпучей фракцией лунного грунта), либо начнут использоваться естественные пещеры, которые встречаются на Луне.
