Согласно регламенту, бундестаг может провести дополнительные туры голосования в течение следующих 14 дней. Победа возможна только при достижении 316 голосов. Если за это время ни один кандидат не получит абсолютного большинства, на третьем этапе будет достаточно простого большинства.
После досрочных выборов в феврале 2025 года, на которых блок ХДС/ХСС занял первое место, Фридриха Мерца называли главным претендентом на пост канцлера.
