Испытания проходили на подмосковном аэродроме ЛИИ в Жуковском. Самолёт С-1, оснащённый турбореактивным двигателем АЛ-7, стал первым советским истребителем, официально преодолевшим отметку в две тысячи километров в час в горизонтальном полёте, или М 1,96.
Позже на базе С-1 был создан серийный фронтовой истребитель Су-7, ставший легендой военной авиации.
