25 августа завершилась Южно-Сахалинская наступательная операция. Утром войска Красной Армии без боя взяли главную японскую военно-морскую базу Отомари (Корсаков). В тот же день капитулировала столица губернаторства Карафуто Тоёхара – наш Южно-Сахалинск.
За освобождение Южного Сахалина свои жизни отдали около девятисот красноармейцев.
До окончания Второй Мировой войны оставалось 8 дней.
