Антонио Паломино, который был знаком с Мурильо, подтверждает, что Мурильо во время своего путешествия в Мадрид общался с земляком Веласкесом (оба они севильцы) и в его сопровождении осмотрел коллекции мадридского Алькасара. Но «Менины» были написаны позже. Мог ли Мурильо видеть копии? В цвете? Это вопросы пока что остаются без ответа.
