معجزه در اصل از عجز گرفته شده، به معنى عاجز کردن است، بنابراین کارهاى خارق العاده اى که از اولیاى بزرگ رخ مى دهد و دیگران از انجام آن عاجز هستند، به آن معجزه مى گویند، مانند زنده کردم مرده، شفادادن بیمار مبتلا به بیمارى بى درمان و امثال آن.
اصل معجزه از پیامبران است که براى صدق نبوّت خود، معجزه از خود نشان مى دادند و موجب ایمان و اعتقاد مردم به توحید و نبوّت مى شدند. چنان که قرآن از دو معجزه بزرگ موسى(ع) در برابر فرعونیان یعنى معجزه عصا و ید بیضاء، تعبیر به برهان کرده و مى فرماید: «فذانک برهانان من ربّک ؛ این دو (عصا و ید بیضاء) دو برهان از طرف پروردگارت مى باشند.») و درباره ناقه صالح معجزه حضرت صالح پیامبر، مىفرماید: «هذه ناقة اللّه لکم آیةٌ ؛این شتر الهى براى شما معجزهاى است.»
