او در پی حمله قلبی و پارگی آئورت، تحت عمل جراحی ۱۲ ساعته قرار گرفت و به مدت ۱۸ روز در بخش مراقبت‌های ویژه بستری بود. علت مرگ او نارسایی چندگانه اندام‌ها اعلام شده است.
دخترش، جرن اندر، در شبکه‌های اجتماعی نوشته بود: «بابا، کاری را که بهتر از همه بلدی انجام بده و مقاومت کن.»
درگذشت او واکنش‌های گسترده‌ای در فضای سیاسی و فرهنگی ترکیه به دنبال داشته است.
