Кажется, это было несложно: маску действительно носили танкисты, годах эдак в 1917-1918. Ранние танки (первые, напомню, поехали в 1916) были довольно ненадежными и неудобными. Во время боя, когда по танку попадали, от брони изнутри отлетали горячие стальные осколки – что, конечно, представляло большую угрозу для экипажа (и без того уже обалдевшего от жуткой жары и отсутствия вентиляции).
Вот поэтому и понадобилась маска.
