تفسير السعدي: ﴿وبالأسحار﴾: التي هي قبيل الفجر، ﴿هم يستغفرونَ﴾: الله تعالى، فمدُّوا صلاتهم إلى السحر، ثم جلسوا في خاتمة قيامهم بالليل يستغفرون الله تعالى استغفار المذنبِ لذنبه. وللاستغفار بالأسحار فضيلةٌ وخصيصةٌ ليست لغيره؛ كما قال تعالى في وصف أهل الإيمان والطاعة: ﴿والمستغفرين بالأسحار﴾.
