Николай Петрович Богданов-Бельский (1868-1945) родился в деревне Шопотово, Смоленская губерния, ныне Тверская область. Русский художник-передвижник, вышедший из народа, академик живописи, председатель Общества имени Куинджи.
Он смог выбраться «в люди», не потонув в нищенских условиях, предоставленных ему жизнью. В церкви его окрестили Богдановым, т.е. данным Богом. Потом он прибавил фамилию Бельский, для благозвучности в среде деятелей искусства.
Человек трудолюбивый и сильный духом Богданов-Бельский писал в основном жанровые картины, особенно образование крестьянских детей, портреты, импрессионистские этюды пейзажей.
