Праздник посвящён памяти святых равноапостольных братьев Кирилла и Мефодия. В IX веке, выполняя миссию по переводу богослужебных книг для Великой Моравии по просьбе князя Ростислава, они создали первую славянскую азбуку — глаголицу.
После смерти создателей, несмотря на преследования, их дело продолжили ученики, благодаря которым славянская письменность укрепилась в Болгарском царстве. В 893 году на Преславском соборе славянский язык получил статус официального языка государства и церкви.
В России традиция празднования этого дня была учреждена Святейшим Синодом в 1863 году, установившим ежегодное чествование 24 мая (по старому стилю — 11 мая).
