Fun Fact!
Hockey players are usually all disciplined, but sometimes their approach to learning English is anything but ordinary. Take NHL star Evgeni Malkin (aka Geno): after joining the Pittsburgh Penguins, he decided to work on his English... with a little help from Hollywood.
🏒 But first – quick background: Malkin has scored over 500 career goals, a milestone reached by just 48 players in NHL history. He sits third in franchise goal scoring behind legends Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby, with a career total of 514 goals and 1 346 points.
🤖 Instead of watching a variety of films, as most teachers recommend, Malkin chose to watch one — ”Transformers” —every single night. His roommate, Max Talbot (a Canadian forward and fellow Penguin), was puzzled:
“Geno, why do you keep watching the same movie over and over?”
To which Malkin replied: "I look at the girl and study the language".
📺 Turns out his motivation wasn’t grammar — it was Megan Fox! The movie became his perfect mix of motivation: entertaining, attractive and educational.
Luckily, Sergei Gonchar (Malkin’s Russian teammate and mentor) let him know the sequel was coming out — so poor Max didn’t have to endure the same old film for the rest of the season!
