Ces mathématiciens qui firent plier le Kremlin / Математики, які "нагнули" Кремль / The mathematicians who brought the Kremlin to its knees

From 1972 to 1975, mathematicians led by Laurent Schwartz, a French Fields Medal winner and leftist, campaigned in the West to secure the release of their Ukrainian colleague Leonid Plyushch, who had been accused of dissidence by the Soviet authorities and locked up in a psychiatric hospital. A mathematician and communist, he belonged to a small group of human rights defenders in USSR. But after his wife Tatiana appealed to a Committee of French mathematicians led by Laurent Schwartz, hundreds of colleagues around the world rallied to demand his release. Thanks to the Committee and the tenacity of Tatiana Plyushch, discreetly aided by Trotskyists, the Plyushch case became such a symbol that it led the PCF, summoned to take a position, to distance itself from the Soviet Union and succeeded in forcing the Kremlin to back down and release Plyushch.
This documentary, directed by Mathieu Schwartz, Laurent Schwartz's grandnephew, is based on the unpublished and exclusive testimony of Tatiana Plyushch, Leonid's wife, as well as that of Michel Broué, the driving force behind the mathematicians' committee, Pierre Juquin, then a member of the PCF's central committee, Laurent Mauduit, a former Trotskyist, and Bernard Guetta.
