31 января 2009 года, постановлением Правительства РФ было создано уникальное авиационное подразделение при Управлении делами Президента РФ. В этот день правительственный авиаотряд официально выделился из состава ГТК "Россия" и получил самостоятельный статус.
Воздушный флот СЛО базируется в московском аэропорту Внуково-2 и насчитывает 71 воздушное судно, включая 23 вертолёта. В парк входят различные типы самолётов: от Ту-134 и Ил-96 до Airbus A319 и Dassault Falcon 7X, а также вертолёты Ми-8 и AgustaWestland AW139.
Элитное подразделение осуществляет авиаперевозки высших должностных лиц государства, включая Президента РФ, Председателя Правительства, руководителей Федерального Собрания, Конституционного и Верховного судов.
Несмотря на современные вызовы, среди которых особо выделяются международные санкции, отряд продолжает выполнять свои ответственные задачи на высочайшем уровне.
