Отец воспитанием потомства не занимается, и даже может представлять для него опасность, поэтому медвежат растит самка. Иногда вместе с малышами-сеголетками (лончаками) держится прошлогодний детёныш (пестун), который помогает матери в воспитании братьев и сестёр.
