Сегодня день памяти воинов Куликовской битвы. 21 (8) сентября 1380 г. на Куликовом поле недалеко от р. Дон столкнулись объединенные русские войска под началом князя Дмитрия Донского и татарское войско Золотой Орды хана Мамая. Причем русские войска были в меньшинстве - 40-70 тыс против 100-150 тыс. По итогам битвы татарское войско было полностью разгромлено. Начался долгий путь Руси к избавлению от татаро-монгольского ига.

По итогам сражения князь Дмитрий Донской вместе с дружиной отслужили в Церкви заупокойную панихиду об убитых воинах. Так на Руси зародилась традиция молиться о всех о павших в бою. В Церкви этот день поминовения называют родительской субботой.
