Standing at just under 56 feet (17 meters), the ‘Big Pineapple’ near Bathurst, Eastern Cape, is the world’s largest pineapple-shaped building.

The surrounding region is primarily agricultural and renowned for its pineapple production. In the 18th century, settlers struggled to grow crops successfully until they discovered that pineapples thrived in the area. To celebrate the fruit—and the prosperity it brought—locals erected this massive structure in the 1980s.

Made of metal and fiberglass, the three-story building houses a museum dedicated to pineapples and features an observation platform at the top.

Though inspired by a similar structure in Australia, South Africa’s Big Pineapple stands just over two feet taller, earning its claim as the world’s largest.

Pavel Durov, Telegram's CEO, is known as "the Russian Mark Zuckerberg," for co-founding VKontakte, which is Russian for "in touch," a Facebook imitator that became the country's most popular social networking site. In February 2014, the Ukrainian people ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, prompting Russia to invade and annex the Crimean peninsula. By the start of April, Pavel Durov had given his notice, with TechCrunch saying at the time that the CEO had resisted pressure to suppress pages criticizing the Russian government. "There are a lot of things that Telegram could have been doing this whole time. And they know exactly what they are and they've chosen not to do them. That's why I don't trust them," she said. As a result, the pandemic saw many newcomers to Telegram, including prominent anti-vaccine activists who used the app's hands-off approach to share false information on shots, a study from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue shows. "For Telegram, accountability has always been a problem, which is why it was so popular even before the full-scale war with far-right extremists and terrorists from all over the world," she told AFP from her safe house outside the Ukrainian capital.
