denn может употребляться как синоним als:
1⃣ В сочетании с je; самый частый случай:
besser denn je – лучше, чем когда-либо schneller denn je – быстрее, чем когда-либо glücklicher denn je – счастливее, чем когда-либо
2️⃣ Когда нужно избежать двойного als:
❎Er war nie glücklicher als als kleiner Junge. ✅Er war nie glücklicher denn als kleiner Junge. - Он никогда не был счастливее, чем когда был ребёнком.
3️⃣ Просто так, без причины – но в возвышенном стиле речи или в старых текстах.
