أثناء معركة استقلال البوسنة والهرسك وبعد سلسلة مذابح ارتكبها الصرب ضد البوسنيين، خرج علي عزت بيجوفيتش في مؤتمر صحفي وقال اسمعوا، لقد قال لي ياسر عرفات "اقبل دولة, حتى لو كانت صغيرة, ولا تكرر خطئي بأن يبقى الفلسطينيون بدون دولة لعشرات السنين"
لقد كان ذلك المؤتمر بمثابة قبول ضمني بتقسيم البوسنة، وبعد أقل من 6 ساعات عاد بيجوفيتش ودعى لمؤتمر صحفي قال فيه: "لقد اتصل بي الجنود، وقالوا نحن لا نقاتل من أجل الحصول على دويلة كالفنجان، دويلة صغيرة كساحة البيت يا علي، إنما حاربنا من أجل كل البوسنة والهرسك ولن نتخلي عن ذلك، لقد تأكدت أنهم ماضون في القتال، ولذلك سأبقى إلى النهاية مع وحدة البوسنة والهرسك"
يقول بيجوفيتش في مذكراته: "إن هناك أشياء غريبة كثيرة تحدث، لقد قال لي الجنود: سيدي الرئيس ليس لدينا رصاص ولا طعام، ثم تلى ذلك جملة غريبة، ولكن نرجوك ألا تتركهم يفلتون دون عقاب، فلدينا القوة وسوف نقاتل حتى النهاية، قد يقول أحدكم أين الحوار المنطقي في كل هذا؟ لا يوجد أي منطق فيه، ولكن هذا هو الشيء الجيد في الموضوع، لأننا لو كنا منطقيين لكنا استسلمنا منذ البداية"
