Сейчас обязательной маркировке подлежат 24 категории товаров, например, молоко, вода и лекарства, но этот список постоянно растет. Планируется, что к 2026 году большая часть будет под контролем.

Для маркировки используют специальные коды Data Matrix, которые уникальны для каждой единицы продукции. Производитель или импортер заказывает их в «Честном знаке» и наносит на упаковку, а система мониторинга сохраняет данные о товаре. Например, дату и место производства.
