Не смотря на формально нейтральный посыл, фраза стала явным маркером принадлежности к субкультурной среде ультраправых. Классический дизайн футболки «Я русский» произошел от татуировки одного из лидеров неонацистской банды «Объединенные Бригады 88» Владимира «Живодера» Трубина. Как рассказывает сам Живодер, эту татуировку на всю грудь он набил ещё в 2000 году, когда уже являлся активным наци-скинхедом и неформальным лидером части московских ультраправых.
