World Animal Day is celebrated every year on October 4, the day commemorating the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi, who is considered to be the patron saint of animals🐾

This day is important for everyone who cares about our home. We suggest looking at the figures that reflect the state of flora and fauna nowadays:

- the UN estimates that about one million plant and animal species are now on the brink of extinction
- one in five species of migratory animals is threatened
- only two female northern white rhinoceros still live on the planet
- animal species are disappearing 1,000 times faster due to human activity
- wildlife populations are declining by 2.5% annually
- emperor penguins are predicted to become extinct in 30-40 years

Today is about caring for our green temple and all its inhabitants, about respect, love and care for everything around us, about protecting all creatures great and small.

Despite Telegram's origins, its approach to users' security has privacy advocates worried. Andrey, a Russian entrepreneur living in Brazil who, fearing retaliation, asked that NPR not use his last name, said Telegram has become one of the few places Russians can access independent news about the war. But this has also meant that the company has also engaged with lawmakers more generally, although it maintains that it doesn’t do so willingly. For instance, in September 2021, Telegram reportedly blocked a chat bot in support of (Putin critic) Alexei Navalny during Russia’s most recent parliamentary elections. Pavel Durov was quoted at the time saying that the company was obliged to follow a “legitimate” law of the land. He added that as Apple and Google both follow the law, to violate it would give both platforms a reason to boot the messenger from its stores. "The argument from Telegram is, 'You should trust us because we tell you that we're trustworthy,'" Maréchal said. "It's really in the eye of the beholder whether that's something you want to buy into."
