زمانی که سلطان محمود، متأثر از حسودان فردوسی، شاهنامه را بي ارزش دانست و از رستم به زشتي ياد کرد و بر فردوسي خشمگين شد و گفت که «شاهنامه خود هيچ نيست مگر حديث رستم؛ و اندر سپاه من هزار مرد چون رستم هست»،
فردوسی بزرگ این‌گونه سرود:

بـنــاهــای آبــاد گـــــردد خــــراب
ز بـــاران و از تــــابـــش آفـــتــــاب

پی افـکنـدم از نظـم کـاخـی بـلـنـد
کـه از بـاد و بـاران نــیــابـد گــزنـد

بـریـن نـامـه بـر عـمـرهــا بـگـــذرد
بـخوانـد هـر آن کس که دارد خرد

بسـی رنـج بـردم بـدیـن سـال سـی
عـجـم زنـده کـردم بدین پـارسی

جـهان کرده‌ام از سخن چون بهشت
از این بیش تخم سخن کس نکشت

چـو ایـن نامـور نامه آمـد بـه بـن
ز مـن روی گیـتـی شـود پـر سُـخُـن

نمـیرم از این پس که من زنده ام
کـه تـخــم سـخـن را پـراکـنـده ام

هر آن کس که دارد هـُشو رای و دیـن
پـس از مـرگ، بـر من کند آفرین

روز بزرگداشت فردوسی، بر همه دوستداران او در جهان فرخنده باد🌷
