وهو أول من استنبطَ في الأندلُس صِناعة الزُجاج من الحِجارة، وصنَع (الميقاتة) لِمعرفة الأوقاتٍ، ومَثَّل في بيته السَّماء بنجومها وغيومها وبروقها ورُعودها، وهو أوَّلُ طيار اخترق الجوَّ، أراد تَطيير جثمانه، فكسَا نفسه بالرِّيش، ومثَّله جناحَين طار بها في الجوِّ مَسافة بعيدةً، ثم سقط فتأذَّى في ظهره، لأنه لم يعمل له ذنبًا، ولم يَدُرِ أنَّ الطائر إنما يقع على زمِكِّه.
ولكنَّه -برغم هذهِ المحاولَة الرائدة التي فشَلت- كان ذَا عبقريَّة هائلة، حتى إنَّ الصفدي بَعْدَ كثير من المدحِ لهُ يصفُه بأنه: "لهُ شخصُ إنسي وفطنةُ جنِّي ".
