صراحة، لا أرى جيلنا، ولا الجيل الآتي، ولا حتى الذي يليه، سيشهد تحرير فلسطين. القضية ليست معلقة كما يحلو للبعض أن يقول، بل انتهت منذ زمن، حُسمت لصالح القوة، وما تبقى لنا هو إرث ثقيل من الموت والمآسي نشاهده يتكرر بلا نهاية. فلسطين عود كونها شعبا، هي فكرة، وهذه الفكرة أُفرغت من محتواها منذ أن فقدت الشعوب القوة والوعي والإرادة، وأصبحت تتعايش مع الخسارة وكأنها قدر دائم. مكتوب علينا أن نرى هذا المشهد يتكرر طوال حياتنا، دون أن نملك القوة لإيقافه أو حتى الوهم بإمكانية تغييره، لا يوجد حل، لا يوجد شيء، يأس تام قاتل، وحده الله من ينقذنا.

The last couple days have exemplified that uncertainty. On Thursday, news emerged that talks in Turkey between the Russia and Ukraine yielded no positive result. But on Friday, Reuters reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin said there had been some “positive shifts” in talks between the two sides. As the war in Ukraine rages, the messaging app Telegram has emerged as the go-to place for unfiltered live war updates for both Ukrainian refugees and increasingly isolated Russians alike. Overall, extreme levels of fear in the market seems to have morphed into something more resembling concern. For example, the Cboe Volatility Index fell from its 2022 peak of 36, which it hit Monday, to around 30 on Friday, a sign of easing tensions. Meanwhile, while the price of WTI crude oil slipped from Sunday’s multiyear high $130 of barrel to $109 a pop. Markets have been expecting heavy restrictions on Russian oil, some of which the U.S. has already imposed, and that would reduce the global supply and bring about even more burdensome inflation. On December 23rd, 2020, Pavel Durov posted to his channel that the company would need to start generating revenue. In early 2021, he added that any advertising on the platform would not use user data for targeting, and that it would be focused on “large one-to-many channels.” He pledged that ads would be “non-intrusive” and that most users would simply not notice any change. At the start of 2018, the company attempted to launch an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) which would enable it to enable payments (and earn the cash that comes from doing so). The initial signals were promising, especially given Telegram’s user base is already fairly crypto-savvy. It raised an initial tranche of cash – worth more than a billion dollars – to help develop the coin before opening sales to the public. Unfortunately, third-party sales of coins bought in those initial fundraising rounds raised the ire of the SEC, which brought the hammer down on the whole operation. In 2020, officials ordered Telegram to pay a fine of $18.5 million and hand back much of the cash that it had raised.
