Козацький отаман Іван Золотаренко, один із ватажків повстання Хмельницького, славився своєю жорстокістю та дикістю. Кажуть, що під час розправи над полоненими в Батозі його дії налякали навіть татар. Коли він помер у 1654 році під Шкловим, Хмельницький наказав провести його похорон у новій церкві в Чигирині. Веспасіян Коховський повідомляє, що під час церемонії мертвий отаман піднявся з труни, і піднявши закривавлені руки, вигукнув: «Утікайте! (на гравюрі XVIII ст. з уст отамана виривається напис «фугіте фугіте фугіте»). Звичайно, козакам, які побачили це, не потрібно було повторювати вигук, і дерев'яний храм загорівся від прокинутих у метушні свічок. Про це Коховському повідомив Данило Виговський, який нібито був свідком похорону отамана.
