Ймовірно, ця назва з'явилась через те, що коли зблизька дивишся людині в очі, то бачиш там неясний силует (себе, тобто) — сходіть до дзеркала, перевірте!
Як бачимо, це було актуально і для староукраїнської — звісно, не зрозуміло наскільки "чоловічок" був вживаним, але в словник потрапив. Цікаво, чи використовують цю назву де-небудь в наші дні.
P.S. Вікіпедія каже, що в давній Месопотамії засвідчена фраза "захисний дух ока". Не знаю як вам, а мені здається, що мати духа-захисника прямо в очах — це пафосніше ніж мати янгола на плечі.
