Работа наполнена нежностью и характерной для Врубеля задумчивой отрешенностью, отстраненность от мира. Критика не приняла картину, однако «Царевну» сразу же приобрел коллекционер Михаил Морозов, завещавший работу Третьяковской галерее. Завещание было исполнено, работа стала частью экспозиции Врубелевского зала.
