Собор сильно пострадал в пожаре в годы Великой Отечественной войны. В 1978 году во время реставрации собора в нише стены был обнаружен тайник с предметами искусства средневековой Руси. Сегодня Собор Рождества Иоанна Предтечи входит в число объектов всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.
