Они оказались агентами молдавских спецслужб и готовились к проведению тайных операций. По информации Федеральной службы безопасности, обвиняемые долгое время по заданию куратора устанавливали контакты с активистами политических движений и общественных организаций.
А куратором у них был один из руководителей Главного управления внешней разведки СИБ Молдавии Александр Сырбу. За переброску двоих агентов в Россию отвечал офицер Главного управления внешней разведки СИБ Адриан Попеску.
