بر پایه‌ی تقویم یزدگردی ایرانیان هر سال را به دوازده ماه سی روزه تقسیم می‌کردند و پنج روز باقی‌مانده را پنجه‌ی دزدیده یا اندرگاه می‌نامیدند و بر این باور بودند که هر روز از ماه را یک ایزد نگهبانی می‌کند و نام آن روز را به نام آن ایزد می‌زدند.
هر گاه که نام ماه با نام ایزد نگهبان آن روز یکی می‌شد، جشنی بر پا می‌گشت.
بر پایهٔ همین باور دیرین پنجمین روز ماه را سپندارمذ، ایزدبانوی زنان و زمین، نگهبانی می‌کرد و دوازدهمین ماه نیز به نام او بود که ما امروز آن را اسفند می‌خوانیم.

ابوریحان بیرونی در آثارالباقیه در توضیح سپندارمذگان این جشن را روز زن در میان ایرانیان دانسته و گفته مردان در این روز زنان خود را گرامی می‌داشته‌اند و به آنها هدیه می‌داده‌اند.
