По данным министерства судоходства и островной политики Греции, захваченный в Оманском заливе танкер St Nikolas связан с греческой судоходной компанией Empire Navigation, в состав экипажа судна входят капитан-грек и 18 моряков-филиппинцев.
Как утверждает греческое издание Efimerida ton Syntakton, в прошлом танкер St Nikolasиспользовался для перевозок находящейся под международными санкциями иранской нефти, после чего был «конфискован США».
