☦️ In Defense of Origen
Origen's "self-castration" is often cited by some as a way to prove Christianity is degenerate, or supports degenerate behavior.
This claim comes from Eusebius' Historia Ecclesiastica. Eusebius' account is brief but contradictory.
1. Origen castrated himself when he was a young catechist.
2. Origen's superior, Bishop Demetrius, praised it.
3. Demetrius later uses Origen's castration against him.
We know the first is odd. Eusebius says that Origen did this because he was young, rash, immature. If that was the case, why is he in an authoritative position?
The second and third make no sense and actually debunk the claim altogether. If Demetrius praised it and that was that, perhaps Christianity was degenerate. But Demetrius used this castration claim against Origen and Eusebius records it as a "grave slander". If this was a positive action and true when Origen was a catechist, it could not have been seen as grave and slanderous.

☦️ In Defense of Origen II
Origen's own life shows us that he is a rigorous scholar. When at the level of a catechist (instructor for new converts), it is likely that he still had that same character. So why would he understand Matthew 19:12 in a completely illogical way?
Moreover, the early Church clearly held disdain for this even back then. At the Council of Nicaea (roughly 100 yrs~ later), it is the first thing condemned in the canons. Origen eventually became recognized as an authority on many subjects. The Nicaean canon on self-castration says:
The Council of Nicaea wasn’t introducing a new stance, it was codifying what had already been the early Church’s view for generations.
To conclude, what is more likely? A highly intelligent instructor castrated himself senselessly, or the rumor unfortunately stuck to Origen's name?

But if anyone enrolled among the clergy has castrated himself when in perfect health, it is good for him to leave the ministry.
