Is my seagate portable charger broken? :(

I have not used it in years, but today I plugged it in and tried tovcopy files on to it. The lights turn on, the machine begins to hum, and the computer even recognizes it. But it won't show up for transferring files. Please tell me this isn't the end.. The one time I actually need it!

What would be an ideal reliable 16TB hard drive for media and document archiving in 2024 ?
https://redd.it/1f6l1yz
by @datahoardingmulti
I have two Seagate 5 TB Hard drives (One Touch & Expansion) and looking to invest in another hard drive that will store the content of both these drives along with having space for another 5-10 TB worth of data.
I use these drives connected to a Macbook Air and do a mirror synchronisation of the content via FreeFileSync.
I am looking at getting another larger capacity drive <20TB that can store the content of above two drives as well as have additional storage left. The content are a mixture of media files (photos , videos, documents - from all my previous computers as well as family members).
I have been lurking here for the past few days and reading about SMR and CMR drives, NAS etc but at the end having real trouble deciding what to pick.
Taking my budget into account, the maximum I can afford is a 16-18 TB desktop hard drive like WD MyBook or Seagate One Touch Hub. Alternatively, I can buy two more 5 TB hard drives but synchronisation and having everything together will be a major challenge.
Can anybody tell me what should I do (pick) in this case ? What would be the most reliable, least noisy and easy to use (plug and play, doesn't hibernate), gets hot or slow with more content addition ?

What is a backup you currently have that is hard to justify having?
https://redd.it/1f6t45d
by @datahoardingmulti
I recently purchased a Synology DS1821+ maxed with 8x22TB drives. Surprisingly still have tons of space left, but I still occasionally look where I began all those years ago, at my 8TB DS411J, and wonder what to do with it, especially since it currently has my old movie collection on it, before I moved all of it to the DS1821+
Logically I would take the time, to go through it and (that dreaded word) delete, the duplicates or those files that are lower quality than updated versions, but I have not pulled the trigger yet, and I don't know what my hesitation is.

DRAMLESS SSD as External drives
https://redd.it/1f6w2h4
by @datahoardingmulti
So I have a old Kingston A400, can I use in a enclosure and use it as an external drive. The reason I'm asking this is because, some people say DRAMLESS SSDs are really the best for storage but not for using as you main OS drive, planning to just make it a storage for old family videos, and 4k videos.

DupeGuru accuracy for same videos of different compression format?
https://redd.it/1f6x6el
by @datahoardingmulti
Does DupeGuru work well for videos that are identical but were compressed differently? Some websites have different compression algorithms, and will even change metadata and file name.
First of all, would picture blocks work for video? Would exif work?

Buy / build new NAS considerations
https://redd.it/1f72qzp
by @datahoardingmulti
I want a new NAS, my plan is to have 5 drives of 16-20TB each, in a raid 5 or equivalent ZFS setup.
Use cases for the NAS:
* automated backups (restic)
* sharing larger files with friends
* media server (plex / jellyfin / or maybe just SMB shares as I do now)
* photo backup and sharing
* document storage (paperless)
The options I've looked at:
# 1) Wait for the synology 1522+ replacement
I already have a synology NAS which I've currently parked at my parents place. I use that for offsite backups (using restic), and for photo backup using synology photo. I also use synology drive
Pro:
* nearly 0 maintenance
* stuff like photo backup works ootb
* I could connect synology drive on both NAS and they'd sync / load balance
con:
* proprietary software
* have to wait (heh)
* CPU might have trouble transcoding media
# 2) Buy some other nas (like ugreen DXP6800 Pro) and run a differen OS on them
pro:
* I can customize it a lot more than synology
* available now
con:
* maintenance
# 3) Build my own NAS
pro:
* can use a powerfull CPU with onboard GPU for transcoding in jellyfin/plex
* probably cheaper
con:
* maintenance
# OS considerations
I run FreeBSD on a VPS I rent and on an rpi here which severs as a sort of shitty local media NAS. I like freeBSD for its stability and up to date packages.
I could run trueNAS, but they are moving away from BSD to debian, which I don't like as-is (old packages mainly), and if I then get debian through a 3rd party, it would probably be lagging behind even more...
Would running freeBSD on a ugreen or homebrew NAS give me a lot of downsides over using something like trueNAS?

Question about Ultrastar for DS214+
https://redd.it/1f78erx
by @datahoardingmulti
Hello
The Synology site says the following Ultrastars are compatible with my DS214+
HUH721212ALE600
HUH721212ALE604
HUH721010ALE600
HUH721010ALE600
However, the one I am looking to buy is a HUH721212ALE601
Are these drives that different that I wouldn't be able to use the HUH721212ALE601 it in my 214+?
Thank you

Is Wasabi running out of steam?
https://redd.it/1f7b1z8
by @datahoardingmulti
I've been using wasabi for years now. I have about 20tb of data stored there and add about a tb every couple of months.
For the last month or two, I've noticed uploading data is getting more and more error prone.
I've tried different servers, different accounts and etc. I still get issues with timeouts or no route to host.
I've troubleshot everything I can think of and still run in to issues.
Meanwhile, I've started using vultr for storage and it works flawlessly everytime. It's not a feature packed but it's cheaper and works well.
Anyone else having issues with Wasabi lately?
I primarily use it with s3cmd but will be switching to rclone shortly to start migrating data out to my other backup host.

What is the current best affordable scanner for family photo and document archival and preservation?
https://redd.it/1f7evx5
by @datahoardingmulti
I am looking to digitally preserve family photos and documents for my extensive family. I am concerned about quality preservation when purchasing a scanner, but I don’t have a lot of money to put into it. Probably around the $300 range plus or minus based on what is the best choice. The reason I don’t want to use a service is because I know I don’t have all the photos across my extended family and I want to be able to either have them send me their photos or take the scanner to where they live to preserve the photos and documents they possess. Until I can convince them all to dig up all their saved photos and documents, I’d have to pay for many sessions of preservation with a service company.
I have delayed this decision for a couple of years now out of analysis paralysis of which scanner to buy and ultimately I end up backing out of decision and holding this project off longer because of some review that brings up a concern over quality.
I want to be my family’s advocate / historian to preserve all our history and make it available to them online, but I need guidance on this first step.
Any advice?
