و يُعتبر "بيون-إم رقم 2" امتداداً لبرنامج روسي طويل الأمد في مجال أبحاث البيولوجيا الفضائية، حيث سبقه إطلاق 11 قمراً من طراز "بيون" بين عامي 1973 و1996، وقد تضمنت تلك المهمات إرسال قرود وجرذان وأسماك وحشرات إلى الفضاء.
