20 лет назад, в первых числах сентября 2004 года, произошел захват заложников в школе №1 в Беслане в Северной Осетии.
Утром 1 сентября во время линейки террористы захватили в заложники школьников, родителей и учителей. Два с половиной дня боевики держали 1128 человек в заминированном спортзале и не давали воды и еды.
Жертвами теракта стали 334 человека, включая 186 детей.

В сентябре 2004 года был уволен главный редактор газеты "Известия" Раф Шакиров из-за субботнего номера газеты, который почти полностью был посвящен трагедии Беслана. Руководство издания посчитало, что номер газеты "не соответствует формату издания".
