Обсерватория располагалась на восточном краю знаменитого Павловского парка. На ее территории находилось 14 будок и приспособлений для магнитно-метеорологических и астрономических определений.
В дальнейшем Павловская обсерватория служила эталоном при основании подобных учреждений в России и за рубежом. В ней были заложены основы таких научных дисциплин, как земной магнетизм, ионосфера, атмосферное электричество, атмосферная оптика, актинометрия, аэрология.
