Rouslan Sidiki is an anarchist from Ryazan, an opponent of the war, and a dual citizen of Russia and Italy. He stands accused of sabotage, including the bombing of railway tracks and an attack on a military airfield in the Ryazan region. The charges against him include “terrorism,” “undertaking training with the intention of perpetrating acts of terrorism,” and the handling of explosives.
Sidiki maintains that his actions were motivated by the desire to prevent harm caused by military operations, with his sole aim being to damage military infrastructure. If convicted of all charges, he faces up to life imprisonment.

In February 2014, the Ukrainian people ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, prompting Russia to invade and annex the Crimean peninsula. By the start of April, Pavel Durov had given his notice, with TechCrunch saying at the time that the CEO had resisted pressure to suppress pages criticizing the Russian government. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been a driving force in markets for the past few weeks. Right now the digital security needs of Russians and Ukrainians are very different, and they lead to very different caveats about how to mitigate the risks associated with using Telegram. For Ukrainians in Ukraine, whose physical safety is at risk because they are in a war zone, digital security is probably not their highest priority. They may value access to news and communication with their loved ones over making sure that all of their communications are encrypted in such a manner that they are indecipherable to Telegram, its employees, or governments with court orders. Such instructions could actually endanger people — citizens receive air strike warnings via smartphone alerts. Individual messages can be fully encrypted. But the user has to turn on that function. It's not automatic, as it is on Signal and WhatsApp.
