Abstract: In this lecture series, we will explore what the Qur’an means by the term ḥikmah. We will closely examine the verses and passages of the Qur’an in which the term ḥikmah appears, following a roughly chronological order.
As part of our discussion, we will also investigate the engagement—or intertextuality—between these Qur’anic passages and the Biblical wisdom literature. The latter places strong emphasis on acquiring wisdom not only through revealed scripture, but also through contemplation of the natural world and personal life experience.
We believe that understanding this intertextual relationship between the Qur’an and earlier wisdom traditions—especially those found in the Bible—can shed light on the Qur’an’s invocation of ḥikmah, allowing us to better appreciate its depth and nuance.

In February 2014, the Ukrainian people ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych, prompting Russia to invade and annex the Crimean peninsula. By the start of April, Pavel Durov had given his notice, with TechCrunch saying at the time that the CEO had resisted pressure to suppress pages criticizing the Russian government. WhatsApp, a rival messaging platform, introduced some measures to counter disinformation when Covid-19 was first sweeping the world. Individual messages can be fully encrypted. But the user has to turn on that function. It's not automatic, as it is on Signal and WhatsApp. The original Telegram channel has expanded into a web of accounts for different locations, including specific pages made for individual Russian cities. There's also an English-language website, which states it is owned by the people who run the Telegram channels. That hurt tech stocks. For the past few weeks, the 10-year yield has traded between 1.72% and 2%, as traders moved into the bond for safety when Russia headlines were ugly—and out of it when headlines improved. Now, the yield is touching its pandemic-era high. If the yield breaks above that level, that could signal that it’s on a sustainable path higher. Higher long-dated bond yields make future profits less valuable—and many tech companies are valued on the basis of profits forecast for many years in the future.
