К 2024 году на Сахалине построят новую взлетно-посадочную полосу. Проект и смету на строительство одобрила главгосэкспертиза РФ.
Новая взлетная полоса будет длиной 3,4 километра, к ней проведут три рулежные дорожки. Старую взлетку переоборудуют в ещё одну рулежную дорожку, рассчитанную для разных типов самолетов.
По проекту предусмотрено создание патрульной дороги, линии связи, строительство водосточно-дренажной системы, очистных сооружений, расположения радиотехнического, светосигнального и метеорологического оборудования. По периметру аэропорта установят системы охраны и видеонаблюдения.
