به گزارش «شورای هماهنگی تشکل‌های صنفی فرهنگیان»، بر اساس آمار ارائه شده از سوی «شهلا کاظمی‌پور»، جمعیت‌شناس، حدود ۳۰ درصد دختران دبیرستانی در ایران به مدرسه نمی‌روند و سالانه حدود ۲۰۰ هزار دختر بین ۱۵ تا ۱۹ سال ازدواج می‌کنند.
دلایل ترک تحصیل دختران عمدتا کودک‌همسری، مسائل فرهنگی و یا در دسترس نبودن مدارس عنوان شده.
اما پدیده‌های شومی چون کودک‌همسری یا معضلات فرهنگی، خود ناشب از دلایل زیربنایی‌تر محرومیت‌های اقتصادی و اجتماعی، به ویژه در مناطق حاشیه و دور از مرکز هستند. فقر مطلق و عدم توانایی خانواده‌ها برای تامین زندگی فرزندان، خصوصی‌سازی آموزش، محرومیت از تحصیل به زبان مادری، نبود امکانات آموزشی برای کودکان زیر سن قانونی و خانواده‌های آنها، دختران نوجوان ساکن در مناطق محروم را به سمت ترک تحصیل و ازدواج اجباری در سنین پایین سوق می‌دهد.
