رسانه‌های محلی در سوریه گزارش دادند که یک اسلامگرای افراطی روز یکشنبه ۲۲ ژوئن (یکم تیر) به سوی انبوه جمعیت حاضر در یک کلیسای متعلق به شاخه ارتدکس شرقی شلیک کرد و در ادامه جلیقه انفجاری خود را منفجر کرد.
در نتیجه این حمله ۲۵ نفر کشته و ۶۳ نفر زخمی شدند.
این حمله در کلیسای «مار الیاس» واقع در منطقه دويلعه در حومه پایتخت سوریه رخ داد.
مقامات این کلیسا در بیانیه‌ای اعلام کردند که «دست‌های خائن شرارت امشب ضربه زد و جان‌های ما و عزیزان‌مان را و در جریان نیایش الهی گرفت.»
