Покровителем ячменя — жита, ячменного поля был св. Федор, прозванный Житником.

Крестьяне говорили: «На Федора не зевай — сеять жито начинай», «Поспеши за Житником, у него одна забота — ячменное поле заборонить».

К Федору Житнику обращались с молитвой, начиная этот день в поле. Его благодарили, когда все поле было засеяно.
Если в этот день зацвела рябина — значит, установилось тепло.

Именины празднуют: Авдиес, Александр, Аркадий, Вит, Георгий, Ефим, Ефрем, Касьян, Крискентия, Лаврентий, Модест, Муза, Николай, Пётр, Фёдор.
