The perpetrators use various names to carry out the investment scams. They may also impersonate or clone licensed capital market intermediaries by using the names, logos, credentials, websites and other details of the legitimate entities to promote the illegal schemes. This ability to mix the public and the private, as well as the ability to use bots to engage with users has proved to be problematic. In early 2021, a database selling phone numbers pulled from Facebook was selling numbers for $20 per lookup. Similarly, security researchers found a network of deepfake bots on the platform that were generating images of people submitted by users to create non-consensual imagery, some of which involved children.

油塘谷油塘位於香港九龍東南的地區，鯉魚門以西北，行政上屬於觀塘區。現在油塘北部以公屋和居屋住宅為主，南部臨海位置現主要用作工業發展的地區已經被政府規劃成私人住宅區，但仍有零星的工業大廈存在。 油塘接鄰的三家村，已有150年歷史，油塘區內也設有觀塘魚類批發市場。
